ABOUT MY WORKS
by Grazia Canciullo
My pictorial-expressive research, over the years and through the use of various graphic and pictorial techniques, has basically developed along two lines, shape and color. Both of these contribute to the definition of the final composition of each work. The impression of the former gives the most immediate and concise meaning possible for the subject handled: for example, in the “aquariums”, “seagulls” etc., the subjects are no longer fish or seagulls, coded symbols of real elements, but what remains of these after their analytical breakdown and re-composition in condensed form; in the case of birds, the impression expresses the essential concept of flight, often highlighted by strokes of pure color. In short, the conceptual expression of the fish’s movement in the water or the seagull’s flight through the air. Therefore the title of each work is simply a pretext, an incitement to provoke in the observer-interlocutor an effort at interior participation, an attempt at dynamic involvement in a play on shapes and colors outside and beyond commonly coded and memorized images. Less rational, and thus more instinctive and immediate, is the message of the chromatic appearance of the research. Both in the contrast as well as the chromatic assonance, pursuing an equilibrium of luminosity. Like the shape, the color also has its own autonomous value which goes beyond the reality of the subject. In general, each composition is characterized by a dominant color – a leitmotiv as for a musical composition – which represents the frame of mind of the creative moment. Thus through the colors, particularly, the sunny Mediterranean part of my personality emerges, formed by the physical environment of my childhood and adolescence, of which light, strong colors and warm atmospheres are essential elements. Another important aspect of apparently complex nature, is the influence derived by the reference of each canvas to a musical-harmonious element, given in the title of the work whose musical theme has been the inspiration and background during the study as well as the actual execution of the pictorial work.
